This Is the One Thing I Really Need You to Know About Your Hair Health

Writer: Brandy ChavezBrandy Chavez

If you’ve ever left the salon feeling obsessed with how soft, shiny, and healthy your hair feels—only to notice a few weeks later that it’s feeling dry, brittle, or even breaking at the ends—this is for you.

Here’s the truth: What you do at home matters more than anything I can do in the salon.

I can give you the best color, the most nourishing treatments, and the healthiest trim—but if your home care isn’t on point, your hair won’t stay feeling as amazing as it did when you walked out of my chair. You see me maybe every 8–12 weeks. You see your own shower every day. What happens in between our appointments determines whether your hair stays strong, soft, and healthy… or whether it starts to feel dry, brittle, and damaged again.

So, What’s Causing Your Hair to Feel Dry?

Most of the time, it comes down to this: a lack of moisture and protection. If you’re not using hydrating shampoos and conditioners, deep treatments, and leave-in products designed to nourish and seal in moisture, your hair is constantly losing hydration. And once that moisture is gone, your hair becomes prone to breakage, split ends, and that rough, dry feeling.

But here’s the kicker—living in Phoenix makes this even worse.

  • Our desert climate is extremely dry, which means there’s little to no humidity to help your hair retain moisture. It evaporates fast, leaving your strands feeling parched.

  • Our water is incredibly hard—loaded with minerals like calcium and magnesium that build up on your hair and make it harder for moisture to penetrate. Over time, this makes your hair feel dry, brittle, and weighed down.

  • Sun exposure is intense. Spending time outside, especially in the summer, can lead to UV damage, which breaks down proteins in your hair and contributes to dryness and fading.

  • Air conditioning is another factor. If you’re constantly in AC (which, let’s be real, is a necessity here), that artificial airflow zaps moisture from your hair just like it does from your skin.

What You Can Do to Keep Your Hair Healthy

  1. Use the Right Shampoo & Conditioner – Avoid anything with harsh sulfates that strip moisture. Instead, use hydrating, salon-quality products designed for your hair type.

  2. Deep Condition Weekly – A nourishing mask or treatment will replenish lost moisture and keep your hair feeling soft.

  3. Always Use a Leave-In – Whether it’s a cream, serum, or lightweight oil, leave-ins help lock in hydration and protect against dryness.

  4. Protect Your Ends – If you’re heat styling or spending time outdoors, make sure you’re using a heat protectant and sealing your ends with a serum to prevent splitting.

  5. Hard Water Detox – If you have hard water buildup, your hair might not be able to absorb moisture properly. A clarifying treatment (like my Hard Water Detox) can remove minerals and allow your hair to soak up the hydration it needs.

If you want healthy, soft, and nourished hair all the time, not just on salon day, home care has to be a priority. Investing in your hair isn’t just about getting a great color or cut—it’s about maintaining it with the right at-home routine.

So, if you’ve been wondering why your hair felt so good when you left the salon but isn’t holding up, let’s take a look at your home care routine. Need recommendations? I’ve got you! Let’s get your hair back to feeling amazing every day.
